Summer: June to August
Summer is the warmest and driest stretch of the Cinque Terre year. July is the driest month at 42mm of rain, and August is the hottest, with an average high of 27.4C (81F). It is also the period when everything runs at full strength.
The Cinque Terre Express reinforced train service is in operation, and the ferry's main season runs from 20 April to 27 September, with an extension to Moneglia and Deiva Marina from 30 June to 29 August. Long daylight helps too. The Via dell'Amore keeps its summer hours from late March to late October, opening 09:00 to 21:00 with last entry at 20:30, which allows an evening walk after the day heat fades.
The trade-off is heat on the steep trails and the busiest conditions of the year, since the peak service level coincides with the warmest, driest months. Spring: April and May
Spring is walking weather with a ramp-up in services. April averages a high of 16.7C (62F) and May reaches 20.4C (69F), with rain in the region of 109 to 110mm per month, so pack a shell jacket. The reinforced Cinque Terre Express service starts in mid-March and runs to early November, so both months enjoy extra trains on the Levanto to La Spezia line.
On the water, the ferry moves from its early shoulder windows into the main season on 20 April, after which boats run daily through the five villages until 27 September. The Via dell'Amore shifts to its long summer hours from 29 March, open 09:00 to 21:00 with last entry at 20:30. Every individual visitor still needs a booked time slot regardless of season, so reserve ahead.

Autumn: September to November
September often feels like the sweet spot. The average high is a comfortable 23.5C (74F), the ferry main season runs to 27 September, and the autumn shoulder timetable continues to 18 October and then to 1 November. The Cinque Terre Express runs until early November, so early autumn still gives you extra trains and boats together.
Then the weather turns. October and November are the wettest months of the year, each averaging 194mm of rain, and the park closes trail sections after storms, for maintenance and for safety. Your card does not override a closure, so build flexibility into any autumn hiking plan and check trail status close to your travel dates.
Sea conditions can also interrupt the ferry, which steps down to a reduced winter timetable from 2 November. Late September still feels like summer on the water. October is better for villages, churches and short walks between showers.

Winter: December to February
Winter is the quiet season, and it changes the logistics. January is the coolest month, with an average high of 10.9C (52F) and a low of 5.9C (43F), and December averages 152mm of rain. The reinforced train service is gone, so you travel on the standard regional timetable only.
The ferry runs its reduced Cinque Terre Trip WINTER timetable from 2 November to 8 December, and no schedule is published for the rest of December through February, which in practice means you should not plan a trip around winter boats. One good reason to come is Manarola's illuminated hillside nativity scene, begun in 1961 by Mario Andreoli, which is lit for the Christmas season across the December and January stretch. Trails can close after storms and the Via dell'Amore drops to shorter hours, 09:00 to 19:00 with a 18:30 last entry in the window running to late March.

What Changes Beyond the Weather

The Train Season Shapes Your Whole Trip
The Cinque Terre Express is a reinforced service, meaning extra trains beyond the regular regional timetable on the Levanto to La Spezia line. It runs from mid-March to early November each year. Inside that window the five villages are easy to hop between, and the window lines up neatly with the warmest, driest months of the climate record.
Outside it, from early November to mid-March, you are on the standard regional timetable only. Trains still run, but frequencies drop and a missed connection costs you more time, so plan fewer village changes per day and check times the night before. This matters most in winter, when shorter days and wetter weather already squeeze your sightseeing.
If your dates fall in the shoulder weeks of March or November, build your itinerary around the standard timetable rather than the reinforced one, and treat any bonus train as luck. Prices do not change by season, the trekking card stays at US$11.37 (€10) a day and the Treno MS train and trail card at US$25.00 (€22) a day.
What the Ferry Calendar Really Tells You
The ferry is run by the Consorzio Marittimo Turistico Cinque Terre - Golfo dei Poeti, and its season is more fragmented than the train's. The 2026 pattern runs 1 to 27 March, then 28 March to 19 April, then the main season from 20 April to 27 September, extended to Moneglia and Deiva Marina from 30 June to 29 August. Autumn shoulders follow on 28 September to 18 October and 19 October to 1 November.
A reduced Cinque Terre Trip WINTER timetable runs from 2 November to 8 December. After that, no schedule is published for the rest of December through February, which in practical terms means you should not build a winter plan that depends on boats. Note that Corniglia has no pier, so the ferry never calls there in any season.

The Via dell'Amore Runs on Its Own Clock
The Via dell'Amore changes its opening hours three times across the year, which trips up visitors who assume summer rules all season. From late October to late March the path opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:30, then from late March to late October it stays open 09:00 to 21:00 with last entry at 20:30, then it shortens again from late October, opening 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30. More important than the hours is the booking.
Every individual visitor needs a booked slot regardless of season, entry is one-way from Riomaggiore to Manarola, and the walk takes about 30 minutes. Access requires a Cinque Terre Card with the Via dell'Amore add-on. Slots are limited per time band, so in the busy months the popular evening bands fill first, and in winter the shorter hours squeeze the available bands further.
