Which Airport for the Cinque Terre? Pisa, Genoa, Florence and Milan

How the Connection Works

Since 2017 the airport has had the PisaMover people-mover connecting the terminal to Pisa Centrale railway station. The connection exists and works, but no official fare or journey-time figure for the PisaMover was confirmed on the operator's own site this pass. The current fare and timing are shown at the airport and on the operator's own site, so check there before you fly.

From Pisa Centrale, Trenitalia regional trains reach La Spezia Centrale, the gateway station for the Cinque Terre Express line that serves the five villages. A change may be needed on this leg. No official journey time or fare for the Pisa to La Spezia leg was confirmed this pass either, so the honest advice is to check the current timetable on trenitalia.com and price it there.

Once you are at La Spezia Centrale the last leg is easy. The Cinque Terre Express uses flat fare bands, $5.68 to $11.37 (€5 to €10) for adults depending on date, for any journey on the Levanto to La Spezia line. Who Pisa Suits

Pisa suits short trips and travellers who want the fewest moving parts. It also works if you want to see the Leaning Tower itself. Pisa is a worthwhile day-trip destination in its own right, and the city-and-tower side of things is covered on our Pisa to Cinque Terre page.

If you would rather not plan the connection at all, there is a guided option that starts right in Pisa. From Pisa: Cinque Terre Small Group Tour with Wine Tasting by BellaItalia Tour is a 9-hour minivan day covering three villages with a wine tasting stop. It picks up in Pisa and Lucca and costs $192.00.

One warning for drivers. The villages themselves bar most non-resident cars, so renting a car at Pisa is only useful if you plan to base yourself in La Spezia or Levanto. Where to leave a car is covered on our parking page.

How the Connection Works

Two routes connect the terminal to the rail network. The Volabus shuttle links the airport with Genova Piazza Principe and Genova Brignole, the two main stations. Alternatively, the nearest rail station, Genova Sestri Ponente-Aeroporto, is served by Trenitalia regional trains and linked to the terminal by an Airlink bus.

From Piazza Principe or Brignole, Trenitalia trains run the Ligurian coast line toward La Spezia Centrale, serving Levanto en route. This means Genoa connects to the Cinque Terre without a change of city. No official fare or exact journey time for that coast leg was confirmed this pass, so check the current timetable and fare on trenitalia.com. Fares inside the villages themselves stay predictable. The local line uses the same $5.68 to $11.37 (€5 to €10) date-band system whether you ride one stop or the whole line.

Who Genoa Suits

Genoa suits travellers who find better flight prices or connections through GOA, and anyone who wants to spend a night in a big Ligurian city on the way. The coast line means fewer changes than the Florence and Milan routes, which is the practical argument for it over the bigger hubs.

The Rail Reality

From Florence, the rail route runs via Firenze Santa Maria Novella. From Milan, it runs via Milano Centrale. Neither city has a direct rail link to La Spezia or Levanto without a change, so budget an extra hop whatever timetable you pick. No official fare or journey-time figure for either route was confirmed this pass, so check trenitalia.com rather than trusting a guess.

Skipping the Planning Entirely

Both cities have organised day trips that remove the rail planning. From Florence, Florence: Cinque Terre Day Trip with Optional Hiking or Pisa by Walkabout Tours runs 12 hours, costs $63.00, and lets you choose all five villages, a guided hike from Corniglia to Vernazza, or three villages plus Pisa.

From Milan, Milan: Cinque Terre Full-Day Guided Trip with Cruise by Z V SRL is the longest of the day trips at 13 hours, simply because of how far Milan sits from the coast. It costs $158.00 and includes a boat leg from La Spezia to Manarola.

Strikes and Backup Plans

Italian rail strikes do happen, and they can touch any of these airport-to-coast connections. On strike days Trenitalia still runs a guaranteed minimum service in the peak bands 06:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 21:00, Monday to Saturday. A strike does not mean the day is lost. A train already running when a strike starts normally continues to its destination if that station is reachable within one hour of the strike's start, so a connection already underway from Pisa or Genoa usually completes.
